Democrats Eye House Majority as Midterm Elections Approach

Shibbir Ahmed, Washington DC — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Democrats are on the verge of regaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives as the November midterm elections approach, setting the stage for a potentially significant shift in the balance of power in Washington. “We’re on the verge of taking back control of the House,” Jeffries told The Associated Press during a campaign stop in Ohio, expressing confidence in his party’s prospects.

Democrats are seeking to capitalize on the political climate to flip competitive congressional districts and reclaim the House majority currently held by Republicans. The outcome of the elections could determine how much influence President Donald Trump has over the legislative agenda during the remainder of his term.

Jeffries has been campaigning across the country, urging voters to support Democratic candidates in closely contested races. Party leaders believe gains in battleground districts, including areas that supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election, could help Democrats secure a majority. The Democratic leader has drawn comparisons with the 2018 midterm elections, when Democrats gained control of the House during Trump’s first term.

However, the outcome remains uncertain. Republicans are working to defend vulnerable seats, while both parties are investing resources in competitive districts that could determine control of the chamber.

Democratic leaders are also preparing a policy agenda in case they regain control of the House. Their priorities include addressing the cost of living, restoring Affordable Care Act tax credits, challenging Republican healthcare policies and increasing congressional oversight of the Trump administration. Jeffries could become the next speaker of the House if Democrats win a majority and elect him to the position. He would make history as the first Black American to serve as House speaker.

The November 3 midterm elections will determine control of Congress for the next legislative session. A Democratic victory in the House would give the party greater power to shape legislation, conduct investigations and challenge the administration’s policies. Republicans, meanwhile, are campaigning to retain their majority and maintain support for Trump’s legislative agenda.

With control of the House potentially hinging on a limited number of competitive races, the final weeks of campaigning are expected to play a crucial role in determining the political direction of Washington.
